Surprisingly, the American government does not require testing or researching chemicals in personal care products before they are put out on the market. Below are some things to avoid when shopping for personal care items for men, women, teens, and babies. Many ingredients in personal care items are found to be cancer causing while others can seriously irritate your body. Find the correct section for you and learn about what you should avoid.
Men - on average, a man uses 6 products a day equaling to approximately 85 different ingredients. Avoid parabens and oxybenzone in after shave, DMDM hydantoin and triclosan in shaving cream, and "fragrance" and PEG/ceteareth/polyethylene in both products. Below are some safe products to use. Women - on average, a woman uses 12 products, or 168 different ingredients, daily. Avoid lactic and glycolic acids in anti-aging products. Research has shown that skin damage from UV rays is increased when using products with these ingredients. Dark, permanent hair dyes contain ingredients from coal tar which has been linked to cancer. If you choose to use chemical hair straighteners, find one without keratin as many treatments are found to contain harsh and toxic chemicals. Below are some safe products to use. Teens - Teenagers use lots of products daily, about 40% more than an adult, and 16 toxic chemicals were found in urine and blood samples from 20 girls. When choosing an acne product, avoid triclosan, parabens, and PET/ceteareth/polyethylene. Skip that cologne or perfume that lists "fragrance" as an ingredient as well as ones containing diethyl phthalate. Loose powder makeup is a big N-O as well as lip products containing vitamin A, often seen as retinol, retinyl palmitate, and retinyl acetate. Below are some safe products to use. Babies & young children - Since babies are smaller than adults, they are exposed to more contaminants in the air they breathe, water they drink, and the food they eat. They are also exposed to more chemicals in baby care items. They have smaller, weaker immune systems which result in the baby having a harder time fending off sickness and disease. Do not use baby powder, it can hurt their developing lungs. Use floride-free toothpaste for children older than two that have learned to rinse and spit completely. Avoid BHA, boric acid, and fragrance in diaper cream. Don't purchase those baby wipes if they contain bronopol, DMDM hydantoin, and/or fragrance.
